‘Beatles at City Park’ lecture at Cabildo

Teenagers line up at the gate to City Park Stadium for the 1964 appearance of The Beatles.

Sixty years ago, the Fab Four from England invaded City Park for a concert. Local author Bruce Spizer will discuss the impact of the event Nov. 12 as part of the Friends of the Cabildo series.

The tax attorney and Beatles fan has penned a number of books about the band and has served as a consultant on several projects for Capitol Records, EMI, Universal Music Group and Apple Corps, Ltd.

The lecture, $10, will take place at 6 p.m. virtually on Zoom. It is the finale of the fall series of lectures.

Register at the Friends website, friendsofthecabildo.org.

Beams and Brews, the Preservation Resource Center’s series of on-site gatherings for a beverage and a look at a restoration project, will travel to the West Bank on Nov. 21.

The historic school, constructed in 1910 with Italianate Revival and Craftsman features, served as the first schoolhouse in Gretna until 1945 when it became a welding school for women and men in response to World War II demands for skilled labor.

The project, owned by Jefferson Parish, is home to the German-American Cultural Center. The upper floors are being restored to create retail and co-working space under the federal American Rescue Plan Act.

The tour begins at 5:30 p.m. and will include members of the project team and a free beverage. Tickets start at $10. Visit prcno.org.
