As the weather starts to warm up, more people are starting to hit local supply stores like Binghamton Agway to grab their outdoor gardening essentials.
Binghamton Agway Owner Crystal App said, “Now is the time people are coming in. It’s definitely as it heats up, as the sun comes out and things start to sprout out of the ground, everybody runs and they want to get all their stuff, make sure that they get it.”
And for some who may be just starting out, or looking to start their own garden, it’s good to start with the basics.
App says, “The most important thing is to make sure you get nutrients in the soil. So adding either a fertilizer or a different type of soil that just has nutrients in it for the plants, that’s number one.”
Along with getting the right seeds and supplies for the season.
“We’ve got all types of different soils, a large selection of soils from organic to non-organic. We’ve got seed starting potatoes and onion sets are in and next week all of our vegetables are going to be coming in, and our annuals, perennials, everything will be coming in, and everybody will be ready to go,” said App.
Gardening can be a great way to learn more about the process of growing food, relieve stress, or just connect with nature.
And while the weather may not always be ideal, App says not to be discouraged.
“It’s easy, but it is weather-dependent. We still are only in April. You know, there’s been fluke things that have happened in May, so it’s something to keep an eye out for. It’s not difficult to grow yourself. All you need is some sunshine and water,” said App.
